Antioxidant defence mechanisms: new players in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis?
نویسنده
چکیده
This comment discusses the study by Videla and colleagues in this issue of Clinical Science in which they have analysed surgical liver biopsies from obese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and demonstrate that fatty liver is associated with a state of oxidative stress and a decreased antioxidant activity. As the disease progresses to steatohepatitis, the defect in antioxidant systems increases. Thus efficiency of antioxidant defence mechanisms, by setting the threshold at which pro-oxidants would become injurious, might represent a determining factor for disease progression from stable steatosis to steatohepatitis.

Effect of pioglitazone, quercetin and hydroxy citric acid on extracellular matrix components in experimentally induced non-alcoholic steatohepatitis
Objective(s):Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is an important component of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) spectrum, which progresses to the end stage liver disease, if not diagnosed and treated properly. The disproportionate production of pro- and anti-inflammatory adipokines secreted from fat contributes to the pathogenesis of NASH. In this study, the comparative effect of piog...

Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition in which triglycerides accumulate in liver cells without a history of alcohol consumption. Evidence has shown that auxiliary treatments, including the use of antioxidant compounds, can be effective in improving nonalcoholic fatty liver. Resveratrol is an antioxidant compound that has been shown to be beneficial in some disea...

متن کاملMolecular Mechanisms and New Treatment Strategies for Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a severe form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), in which most patients exhibit non-progressive, non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) attributable to simple steatosis. Multiple hits, including genetic differences, fat accumulation, insulin resistance and intestinal microbiota changes, account for the progression of NASH. NAFLD is strongly associate...
